On the Front Cafe & eatery

On The Front Cafe is a coffee shop and eatery located in the heart of downtown Thorold between the new and old canals, right on Front Street South. The owner and creator is Christina Skrtich. Christina’s husband Michael also has a vision to transform downtown Thorold into a destination spot. His vision is to see Thorold and specifically the downtown become a great place to live for young singles and professionals, university and college students as well as older people who are now empty-nesters. The most important ingredient in this equation is a proper café. After acquiring 30 Front Street South and converting the apartments to trendy rooms with en-suites it was now time to find the perfect entrepreneur for the space in front. Christina is that person and now we have a café with a colourful, trendy, cozy and warm atmosphere in the revitalizing downtown. THE BUILDING There are several unique features about the building that you will see when visiting. First; the original tin ceiling was removed, sanded, repainted and re-installed (dents and all). Second; after the fire that was started on April 29 1866 most of the downtown burnt down, including the current location of the café. We have exposed a small section of the stone wall that was in the fire and you can see the minerals in the stone (because they were exposed to the heat). Lastly, during renovations on the outside walls we discovered a stone wall under the stucco. This stone wall is found on the exterior of the cafe and is part of Bridal Alley. THE FOOD On the Front Cafe teamed up with the culinary team of Ravine Winery to create five gourmet sandwiches to serve in our cafe. Housemade breads, pastries, and dressings make On the Front's experience unique. Our goal is to have top quality products for our customers to enjoy; from fair trade, organic coffee beans to housemade breads.
